The End of Season Celebration allowed player, coaches and parents of U12+ to look back on the 2011 season and recognize MVP, Most Improved, and Coaches Award players from each team in addition to awarding the Keith Trimper Award to the successful 2011 nominee.

Summer Soccer Camp

Valley District Soccer Association (VDSA) expects to offer a summer soccer camp at Digby Elementary School from Jul 4 – 7
U6 – U8 will attend mornings from 9 am – 12 pm, Mon – Thurs
U10 – U16 will be will attend from 9 am – 3:30 pm Mon – Thurs
U10 – U16 goal keepers will have separate instruction in the AM and join the larger group in the PM.
The mornings will be skills, drills and small sided games – the afternoons will be larger jamboree style games.
The fee for 4 days will be:
U6 and U8 = $15
U10 - U16 = $25 ($6.25 / day)

You will need to bring:
Lots of water, lunch & snacks, sun screen, personal soccer clothing (cleats, soccer socks, shorts, t-shirt)

Last year the camp was 3 days in duration, very enthusiastically attended, and delivered by top notch soccer players form NS University teams.
This year the camp has been extended to 4 days and the early delivery will allow players to apply skills during the whole summer season. I hope you can take advantage of this quality program.

Summer Soccer Registration Closes June 15

Get your registration form and money into the Digby Area Recreation Commission (DARC) office by the end of business on Wednesday June 15 to play in the current soccer season.
Digby Area Soccer Association (DASA) has youth teams in U12 M and F, U14 M and F, U16 F, U18 M and F and there is a Senior Women's 11 a side team. They have mini teams in U8 M and F, and U10 M and F.
The Digby Area Recreation Commission offers socccer programming at the U4 and U6 age levels.

Active For Life coaching clinic Sat June 4-5

Eight (8) DASA coaches will be travelling to Kenville to participate in the 'Active For Life' coaching clinic being delivered by the Valley District Soccer Assoc (VDSA). This clinic is targeted at coaches working with the U14 - Senior players.
DASA will have provided training to approximately 30 coaches in the 2011 season. These clinics are vital to keep coaches motivated and providing top notch instruction to the active youth of the Digby region. DASA believes that great coaches are key to having a healthy soccer program - thanks coaches.

Digby declares teams

DASA is declaring teams in the following age groups: U8 Boys, U8 Girls, U10 B, U10 G, U12 B, U12 G, U14 B, U14 G, U16 G, U18 B, U18 G, and Senior Women.
The game schedule will be out within a week.
U8 will start games the week of June 20, U10 the week of June 12, and the Youth the week of June 6. The Senior Women will be starting May 24.

Responsibilities:

 Coordinate the summer soccer youth program

U8 - U10 Soccer Academy in Digby

In cooperation with Valley District Soccer Assoc. (VDSA), we will be offering a Soccer Academy in the Digby Elementary School gym from May 2 - 30 on Monday nights. For five (5) weeks curriculum from the VDSA soccer academy will be used as the core material for players and local coaches to deliver a top notch program. Staff from VDSA will mentor our coaches in the delivery of age appropriate skills, drills and small games. U8 players will attend from 6 - 7 pm and U10 players will play from 7 - 8 pm.on Mondays.
We hope to see this type of programming offered regularly to our developing players.

Soccer NS takes U12 to national format

Starting in the summer of 2011 U12 outdoor soccer will adopt the national format for U12 play. The key differences are: smaller field size (min 70m x 50m), smaller nets (18.5' x 6.5'), and 9 v 9 players on the field. There are many identified improvements to this format of play at this age level. More touches on the ball per player, an appropriate field that is between the min and full size, and an appropriate sized net that is between mini and full size. This development is meant to transition players into the next stage of playing on a full size field. Some of the difficulties are the requirement for new (different) equipment and requirements to line the field to a different size - further streatching scarce resources. The school format is not expected to change to a 9 v 9 format for this age group so kids will play in a 11 v 11 format in the school system. If the logistic and equipment requirements can be resolved the new format will make for a good age appropriate change.

We started on Jan 10th 6 pm - there is room for more interested youth. We will be increasing your skills and playing lots of games to reinforce and practice new technique. Come join us Mondays 6pm - 7:30 until Feb 28.

Indoor soccer has started and will run Monday nights (6pm - 8pm) until mid-December, and then again from March until mid-May. We have ~25 youth playing soccer and building their skill sets. Thanks to the Digby Elementary School and the parent coaches for making this possible.

Field Projects Reporting Wrapping Up

The municipal field construction has been reported to funders and we are now reconciled with the Municipality of the District of Digby. Elementary School Field supports Jr & Snr High teams

As the DRHS field sod repairs become rooted, the DES field supports the practices and games of the Junior and Senior High School Ladies and Mens teams. Enthusiastic players are vying for currently regional slots in hopes of provincial playoffs. Go Mariners Go!
The Municipal field is completed and the sod continues to get solidly rooted in the late fall growing season.
All fields are expected to be available for teams in the spring/summer of 2011. We are expecting to enter the best equipped season experienced by Digby and Area Soccer Association. The cooperative field maintenance agreement with DARC has made significant improvements in the condition of the fields. Irrigation has established new fields and dramatically helped to maintain a lush playing surface on the DRHS field this summer.

The Municipal Mini Soccer field is complete

The site has been grubbed, screened, and levelled to prepare for the addition of soil and supplements. The sod was laid in mid-August and we have been irrigating regularly to help establish the field for the 2011 season. A big thanks to our financial sponsors, Maxner Construction, the Municipality of the District of Digby, and Harold Alexander for making this project a reality.
The 2011 season will see the Digby and Area Soccer Association sporting two full sized fields and a mini field. With the support of the Digby Area Recreation Commission (DARC) to maintain these quality assets we will have a superior club for years to come.

U12 Boys and Girls play in regional finals

Saturday August 28 will see both the U12 Boys and Girls teams playing for the regional Championship titles.
The Boys play at 1 pm at Lochart Ryan field #3 in New Minas. The Girls play at 3 pm at Lochart Ryan field #3 in New Minas.
The winners will go on to represent the Valley District at Provincials in September.

Soccer Clinic builds interest

U8 - U14 will benefit from a soccer skills clinic Aug 10-12, 9:30-12:30 daily. U8 - U10 will be grouped together while U12 - U14 form another group. U10 - U18 keepers will be practicing goalie skills to better their game.
Angela Morrison, technical director for VDSA, and her team will be delivering a professional clinic like we have never seen before. This is a superb opportunity to prepare for playoffs or the upcoming school soccer program. The cost of the 3 day clinic is $25. Registration and money goes to Valley District Soccer Association.

Waste Check sends check

7 soccer players and 2 coaches swept the ditches of the Landsdowne Road from exit 25 towards Bear River for a distance of 2 kms. The rain did not deter us from collecting 6 bags of litter. Thanks Waste Check for promoting this initiative.

Soccer Clinics Aug 10 - 12, 2010

Valley District Soccer Assoc (VDSA) technical director, Angela Morrison, and her excellent staff will offer two soccer clinics - one on skill development (U8-U14), the other on goalkeeper skills (U10- U18). The dates are Aug 10, 11, and 12, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Cost for the clinic is $25.
We will try to also include U14 boys in the skills clinic, and U14 - U18 boys in the goalkeeper clinic. These groups did not have a summer program due to insufficient enrollment.

Progress on the Municipal Mini Field

The earth mounds are screened, rocks and clods removed and the remaining topsoil leveled and shaped. Soon the new sod will go down - then its irrigation and lots of TLC to have the field ready for next season.

Work to begin on DRHS field and Municipal field

Mid-late August will see the sod fly on these two fields as we complete the final stage of our recreation projects. The DRHS field will have a patchwork of repairs primarily around the goal mouths, center spot, and penalty spots. The Municipal field will be leveled, shaped and sodded to give U4 - U10 players a top quality field designed for their needs.
With top notch fields, and ample space we want to see organized soccer tournaments being hosted in our community again.

Repairs to Elementary School Field completed

Valley Sod & Landscaping have finished rebuilding and resodding the DES field. In mid-August we will be able to play on that field. The repairs to the DRHS field will then commence. The two irrigation spray guns have been vital to helping get the new sod established and to keep the DRHS field playable with the extra wear and tear. Thanks Harold and Max.

RBC comes through with a Partnership Grant

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) recognized the effort of the local branch employees and members of the DASA club in doing community service projects. RBC has contributed $1000 towards our project of rejuvenating the Elementary and High School fields.

Irrigation Equipment - essential purchase

DASA has investigated commercial sprinkler systems as a means of establishing the new sod being laid in June and August. Irrigation will also allow us to apply water to ALL fields during critical dry periods thereby dramatically improving the health of sod, improving the playing surface, and increasing the safety factor to our players. We have settled on two (2) Twin Komet sprinkler guns with 70 m diameter distribution. The fire hydrant supply will require a pump to boost the pressure to 50 - 80 psi for operation. Two sprinklers will need to operate for 3 hours to saturate a large field adequately.
The addition of this capacity to the recreation fields in Digby is truly exciting.

Dept of Health Promotion and Protection supports DASA projects

The Government of Nova Scotia's Recreation Facility Development (RFD) Grant Program for 2010-11 approved financial support to repair the School fields and construct a mini soccer pitch in Seabrook.

This commitment will help our organization continue to development of sport and physical recreation programs and services that make life better for families in Digby and the region.

This significant contribution assures the project will ahead and provide exceptional facilities for years to come.

Manzer Construction has been busily completing the screening of the field grubbing, removing rocks, and leveling the remaining soil. Shortly Valley Sod and Landscaping will be adding more top soil and laying sod to complete a field dedicated to the Under 4 to Under 10 (U4 - U10) players. Eight weeks after the sod is laid, and regular irrigation, this field will be available for our strong mini program.
Digby Area Recreation Commission (DARC) has been involved in establishing a maintenance program for this new community asset. Maintenance is essential to having a top quality field for many years of enjoyment.

Work Begins on DES Field

Valley Sod and Landscaping started construction on the Digby Elementary playing field. Roto-tilling of the existing surface and addition of soil has prepared the site for laying sod next week. Approximately 8 weeks of regular irrigation will present a Class B, or better, field for school and community sporting events.
The Digby and Area Recreation Commission (DARC) has been very proactive and supportive in designing a maintenance regiment that will keep these fields in top shape for years to come. Maintenance and long term planning will be the best investment we can make.

D&ACHB has committed Community Wellness Funds to a number of projects to be undertaken this summer by the Digby Area Soccer Association (DASA). Tri-Country Regional School Board starts process

TCRSB issued a purchase order for the work on the Digby Elementary School, and Digby Regional High School fields today. Work is expected to start on the Elementary School field immediately. Once the sod is laid it will take 8 weeks and regular watering to get it ready to play on. Once the DES field is ready the repairs to the High School field will commence (mid-late August). The High School field will also require 8 weeks to get established - High School soccer may have to start on the Elementary School field.

This summer will require patience and cooperation - but Digby and area will once again have two quality fields for the community to share. Let's start the happy dance NOW.

Indoor Soccer is starting soon, this is a great way to get prepared for the summer season. We are sending this to all players in an attempt to spread the word to family and friends for those aged 6 - 13 years of age (U8 - U14). The schedule is as follows:
U8-U10
Start / Registration - Tuesday March 23rd, 5pm U8, 6pm U10 at DES. Duration 8 weeks.
Cost - $20 + $10 raffle tickets for field construction.
U12-U14
Start / Registration - Thursday April 8th, 6:30pm U12, 7:30pm U14 at DRHS. Duration 8 weeks.
Cost - $20 + $10 raffle tickets for field construction.
The annual DASA newsletter will be coming out soon with celebrations of last year and information for the upcoming season.

Digby and Area Soccer Association Plans Improved Fields

DASA spent the winter planning and building partnerships to further 2 projects dear to our association's objectives.
We are working with the Tri-County Regional School Board to restore the DES and DRHS playing fields to their former condition. The DES Home and School has contributed funding and support to the improvement of these important community assets.
The Municipality of the District of Digby has been eager to see the area behind the Municipal Building used for community recreation and wellness. Our cooperative effort will see a mini sized soccer field built to suit the U4-U10 (Ages 3-10) players.
The comprehensive maintenance plan initiated by the Digby and Area Soccer Association will form partnerships with stakeholders to ensure these fields are properly maintained for future generations.

ACOA Announces Support for Digby Soccer Infrastructure

Today Federal MP, Gregg Kerr, announced the Federal governments support for the DASA partnered projects.
From the ACOA announcement....
The Municipality of the District of Digby will also soon be home to a brand new mini soccer field through an investment of $11,582. The field is specifically designed to aid in the development of young soccer players.
...an investment of $8,884 will be used for repairs to two existing soccer fields operated by the Tri-County Regional School Board. The soccer field upgrades are intended to improve safety while making them more enjoyable places to play.

“Heavy use of these two fields has caused the need for crucial repairs,” said Phil Landry, Superintendent of the Tri-County Regional School Board. “With the help of this funding, we can ensure the fields will be restored for years of enjoyment.”
